Doubts over 2012 elections

Nairobi - During the Third National Dialogue and Reconciliation Conference at the Crowne Plaza Hotel in Nairobi, Kenyan officials and international mediators agreed that corruption, tribalism and impunity are very big challenges ahead of the 2012 elections.

The Standard
reports that Chief mediator and main force behind 2008 power-sharing deal, Dr Kofi Annan, said there was little interest in assessing the progress made since the post-election violence. Prime Minister Raila Odinga echoed this sentiment.

PM Raila highlighted the importance of the law, which was enacted to reform the electoral process, but made it clear that the responsibility lies with Kenyans to carry out peaceful elections.

South Africa’s retired judge Johann Kriegler, who led a judicial inquiry on Kenya’s electoral mess, warned against chaos that could come with next year’s elections which could make past 2008 look like a picnic.
