Cord, Jubilee MPs working on ICC deal
22 October 2013, 07:59
Nairobi - MPs from Cord and Jubilee coalitions are working on an agreement to have the cases against President Uhuru Kenyatta and his deputy William Ruto at the International Criminal Court deferred for one year.
The MPs met at Parliament Buildings last Thursday to discuss the issue. Those pushing for an Inter Party Parliamentary Group (IPPG) forum to reach the agreement are scheduled to meet today, The Standard reports.
However, the MPs acknowledge that suspending the cases would not provide a permanent solution to the cases and are therefore seeking other avenues that include setting up a local justice mechanism to petition the ICC to refer the cases back to Kenya, compensation of victims and the establishment of a truth commission on the post election violence.
