Coast leaders to oppose Mathaura appointment in court

06 January 2014, 10:25

Mombasa - Coastal leaders threatened court action if President Uhuru Kenyatta did not revoke the appointment of the former head of civil service, Francis Mathaura, to head the multimillion Lamu Port Southern Sudan Ethiopia Transport Corridor Authority (LAPSSET).

The leaders held that the dismissal of Professor Abdul Razak, who was appointed by former President, Mwai Kibaki, as illegal and demanded his reinstatement.

“We do not have a problem with Mathaura, his age or where he comes from but we already had a LAPSSET Chairman,” said the leaders after a joint press conference.

Retired President Kibaki had appointed Professor Shaukat to head the project for a period of three years in a gazette notice published on 1st of February 2013.

The Coast leaders demand an explanation to the termination of the contract.

“According to Kenyan law a parastatal head’s contract can only be terminated on the basis of incompetence,” argued the leaders.

Kenyatta’s appointment of parastatal heads has often drawn criticism from some political parties.
