Mombasa - Coast MPs are divided over the controversial multimillion Standard Gauge Railway project.
Nyali MP, Hezron Awiti, has called for the termination of the project until the graft claims were cleared.
He wants the suspension of the project that was launched by President Uhuru Kenyatta.
“Niliuliza price ilikua namna gani, na ilikua tender namna gani na katika county government ya Mombasa infrastructure kama kujengwa railway station imekua approved na nani? Mimi naomba speaker afuate sheria ya bunge na kama kuna ubaya lazima wakenya wajua kwamba kuna ubaya katika hii tender process. ( I inquired about the cost, the tendering process, and about who approves projects such as railway construction in Mombasa County? I request the Speaker to follow Parliamentary law and if there is a fault Kenyans must know that there was an error with the tendering process),” said Awiti.
In a quick rejoinder, the Kilifi MP Gideon Mungaro scoffed at Awiti’s request saying that the Mombasa-Malaba railway project would benefit the Coastal region.
The legislatures’ divisions come amid an ongoing probe by the Parliamentary Committee on Investment, which has summoned two former Ministers to appear before it.
The committee would also question the outspoken Nandi Hills MP, Alfred Keter and the Attorney General Githuu Muigai.
Keter is on record claiming that the tendering process was flawed and the total cost inflated.
