WATCH: President Kenyatta brands Kenyans as 'experienced thieves'

26 February 2016, 19:26

Nairobi - Kenyans are only good at stealing and hurling abuse at each other, President Uhuru Kenyatta has said.

Kenyatta said this while speaking to a group of Kenyan students and business people living in Israel.

The president is currently on a three day visit to Israel.

According to the The Star, an animated Kenyatta branded Kenyans as "experienced thieves", adding that the east African country was lagging behind in terms of development because people had lost focus of what was "right".

Kenyatta accused Kenyans of wastage, saying they perpetuated hatred despite being in a "good country".

A video posted on Youtube by Citizen TV, showed Kenyatta lambasting his fellow people in Swahili. He accused them of a number of serious ills which he said had led to the country's economic downturn.

"Sisi kama wakenya Mungu ametupatia nchi ambayo ni nzuri mara ishirini kuliko hii tuko hapa. Lakini tukitembea ni kulia, ni kuiba... tuko na ujuzi pia ya kuiba, ya kutukanana, ya kufanya mambo mengine maovu na kuleta ukabila". (Kenyans are also blessed with a beautiful country, which is 20 times better than this (Israel). But we have channeled our energy on whining, stealing, tribalism and insulting each other)," he said.

Watch the video below.

Kenyatta asked for prayers so that he could lead the country into what he hoped would be a bright future.

Kenya is ranked among the world's most corrupt nations.

In its 2015 index,Transparency International ranked Kenya, which is the 7th biggest economy in Africa, as the 139th most corrupt country in the world. The ranking was based on 168 nations.
