WATCH: Kenyan children suffocate while playing in abandoned car

05 February 2016, 17:57

Nairobi - Two families are in mourning in Western Kenya after their children died of suffocation while playing in an abandoned car.

The incident took place in the Nyalenda slums Kisumu City in western Kenya Thursday after the children unknowingly locked themselves in the vehicle while playing.

In the report by the KTN TV network, 2 year old Justin Bruno and 4 year old John Mboya died, while their three year old friend survived and is fighting for his life in hospital.

The heartbroken mothers of the deceased struggled to come to terms with the cruel death of their sons.

" We realized at around 10 AM that he was missing and so we looked for him and after a number of hours we raised alarm and that is when we were told that they had been found in the car yard in Kilo," Josephine Akinyi mother to Mboya said.

In a heartbreaking twist,  Josephine Adhiambo, mother to Bruno says that she found her son still alive but struggling to breath and tried her best to resuscitate him.

" I found him struggling to breathe so I tried to help him by blowing air in his direction and putting him in an open space. I then called for help and rushed him to hospital but unfortunately he had already died," she stated.

The report continues that after the incident, the car in question was towed away, as were other abandoned ones.

According to forensic pathology, suffocation is described as lack of oxygen in the body either due to lack of it in the environment or blocking of air passages in some form.

Incidences of children suffocating in cars while playing are not new.

In January, The Telegraph reported that 5 children also suffered the same fate in Durban South Africa, while The Times of India also carried a similar report which claimed the lives of 4 children.
