12 February 2016, 09:48

Nairobi - A 3-month-old boy who was suffering from acute meningitis died at the Mama Lucy Kibaki hospital in Nairobi while waiting for an ambulance.

Dominick Wayne Otieno waited for over five hours to be transported to Kenyatta National Hospital where he had been referred for specialized treatment.

In an interview with Citizen TV, Dominick’s father, Gerald Otieno accused the hospital of negligence in handling of their only son.

Gerald Otieno : “My son would not have died if the hospital acted promptly. We waited for the ambulance from 10am to 3pm.”

However, the Nairobi County Health executive Dr Bernard Muia said the boy was referred at 1pm and not 10am as alleged by his father, adding that it would have taken 3 hours to get to KNH.

He also alleged shortage of ambulances, The Star reports, saying the only working ambulance had taken another patient to KNH by the time baby Dominick was referred.

Last year, a woman bled to death at the facility in an alleged case of medical negligence.

Lilian Obiero who had been rushed there in labour delivered safely but bled to death after she was left unattended.
