WATCH: General Service Unit officers beat University students following protests

05 April 2016, 13:46

Nairobi - A video has emerged showing the General Service Unit (GSU) police officers beating students of the University of Nairobi (UoN) who were demonstrating over election malpractices.

In the video that was captured along State House Road near Chiromo campus, the students are seen lying down in a straight line as the GSU officers go back and forth hitting them with rods.

The students were protesting the re-election of Babu Owino as the Students’ Union chair, saying that he rigged his way into office.

Owino has allegedly held the position since 2011, but students said they are tired of his leadership which has been characterized by hooliganism and violence.

Owino dismissed the rigging claims saying he was fairly elected, with further reports indicating that he has already been sworn into office.

The University administration also dismissed the rigging claims and threatened to take action against those involved in the demonstration.

Kenyans have condemned Babu Owino’s actions and demanded that he be handed over to the anti-corruption agency for investigations.

They also condemned the police for using excessive force on the students who were fighting for democracy.

The Nairobi police boss, Japheth Koome has however dismissed the video saying it is aimed at discrediting the image of the officers.
