Kakamega - Kenyans are enraged after pictures emerged of patients in Kakamega general hospital sleeping in cut-out cartons due to lack of mattresses.
Their plight came to light after the County First Lady, Priscilla Oparanya visited the hospital to distribute food.
Citizen Digital then posted images of patients sleeping on cardboards and cartons, with another coverage by NTV showing some patients lying on the floor.
Doctors at the facility added that the hospital doesn’t have important life-saving equipment such as the suction machine, putting patients at risk.
The hospital administration blamed the situation on the government, but the County Health Executive Peninah Mukabane rubbished the reports saying the people sleeping on cartons were not patients and were out to tarnish the name of the County.
According to Standard, Jaramogi Oginga Odinga Teaching and Referral Hospital in the neighbouring Kisumu County is no better as patients are being discharged before recovery to pave way for new admissions.
