Ugandan peacekeeping soldier dies at JKIA

14 September 2016, 20:22

Nairobi – Four Ugandan soldiers with the African Union mission in Somalia (Amisom) were airlifted into Nairobi on Tuesday night following a landmine accident.

According to the Daily Nation, one of the three died 10 minutes after landing at Jomo Kenyatta International Airport.

Their vehicle was hit by a landmine in the seaport town of Barawe, South of the Mogadishu capital.

The deceased has been identified as Amos Mugisha while the two injured soldiers are Dennis Bwankia, Paul Kyakuse and Jimmy Okello.

Somalia hosted regional African heads of state on Tuesday for a summit that was the first of its kind in the Somali capital since the Horn of Africa nation plunged into conflict in 1991.

Security has been a major concern as leaders feel it will deter citizens from voting. They are worried that only a fraction of Somalia's 11 million people will vote in the election.
