Nairobi - An Uber driver escaped with injuries after unknown people attacked him on Sunday, torching his taxi in renewed attacks against the global taxi service in Nairobi.

The driver had just dropped a client on Kirichwa road in Kilimani, Nairobi when a group of four people emerged from another car, doused his with petrol then set it ablaze.

He managed to escape from the burning car, but the gang seized him and gave him a thorough beating that left him with serious injuries.
The attackers escaped immediately, Standard reports.

Uber has become increasingly popular in the Kenyan market since its launch last year, with customers citing cheap model, security and efficiency.

Its partner drivers in Nairobi have reported intimidation, harassment and attacks on their cars, with the government promising to resolve the revolt.
