President under fire for demanding money from Waitiki squatters

11 January 2016, 09:53

Mombasa - Former squatters of Waitiki farm feel cheated by President Uhuru Kenyatta after he demanded that they pay KES 182 000 for the lease certificates he gave them.

The original owner of the 930 acre land in Likoni, Evanson Kamau Waitiki already surrendered the land for the resettlement of the land which was invaded by squatters in 1997.

A total of 7,807 residents have benefitted from the resettlement scheme, and have already received their lease certificates from the President.

However, the residents initially thought they had been given full ownership of the land, as majority did not understand the difference between a title deed and certificate of lease until the President said they must pay KES 182 000 for the documents.

According to The Star, the president said he cannot waive the fees, and asked the residents to pay in a span of three years.

Once asked to waive the fees by local leaders, the President publicly declared that they did not qualify for a waiver as they did not vote for them, attracting sharp criticism from Kenyans on Twitter.
