Preachers don't need certificates, Raila says

13 January 2016, 23:02

Nairobi - Preachers do not need certificates, CORD leader Raila Odinga has told the government as debate rages over a directive to issue television preachers with certificates.

Capital News reports that the opposition leader has taken a stand against the new directives issues against preachers and churches by the government.

One of the directives is that preachers have licenses to prevent cases of fraud by certain churches.

" Who trained John the Baptist? Who trained Peter or Paul? Religion is a calling. Religious leadership is a gift. You can’t train people into religious inspiration,” he is quoted as saying.

Raila further accused the President of allowing poor regulations be drafted which have the potential to bring confusion on how different faiths are managed.

In a report on The Standard, mainstream churches are said to be happy with the directive to seek regulation of the sector, stating that many Kenyans are falling victim to rogue preachers and their thirst for money.
