Police disrupt alleged plot by extremist medics

04 May 2016, 08:13

Nairobi — Kenya's police chief says officers have disrupted a cell of extremist medics linked to the Islamic State group who are suspected of plotting an attack on Kenya and recruiting university students to join the group in Libya and Syria.

Joseph Boinnet said Tuesday that a court allowed anti-terrorism police officers to keep Mohammed Abdi Ali, a medical intern at the Wote District Hospital in Makueni County who was arrested Friday, for 30 days to complete investigations.

Boinnet said Ali's wife, a medical student in Uganda, has also been arrested. Boinnet said two of Ali's alleged accomplices Ahmed Hish and Farah Dagane, medical interns in the western town of Kitale, have gone into hiding. Rights activists have since Friday suggested that police could be involved in the medics' disappearance.
