Nairobi - More than 22,249 public primary schools have been fully connected to electricity according to the Rural Electrification Agency (REA). Of these, 18,074 have been electrified through grid extension while 4,175 linked through installation of solar PV systems.
The total number of schools that require power connection are 23,375. The State Agency says major construction works have also been completed for 646 schools, and are awaiting transformers and commissioning.
“When the project started, the data available then indicated a total of 19,000 public primary schools. Since then, more schools have been identified and the number currently stands at 23,375 public primary schools,” said the Agency CEO Ng’ang’a Munyu.
“Work is in progress for a further 247 primary schools but this has been affected by a shortage of line construction materials. Arrangements have been made to acquire the missing materials by around mid-July 2016 and they are expected to be completed by the end of August 2016,” he noted.
