Over 1000 Turkana County residents displaced

Turkana – Close to 1 000
residents on Turkana County were left homeless after intense rains, reports

This comes after Rivers
Turkwel and Kawalazee burst their banks, sweeping away the Soweto, Napetet,
Kalifonia and Nakerekei villages.
Transport in the area has
also come to a halt affecting local schools as well.
The rain is attributed to
the El Nino rains which have been affecting the country since 2015.
In December 2015 alone more
than 50 000 Kenyans were left displaced after heavily rainfall.
According to IGAD’s Climate
Prediction and Applications Centre’s Director, Guleid Arton, has stated that
the El Nino rains were not yet over, but are expected to subside.
Because Kenya is an
equatorial region it will experience advanced rainfall.
Meanwhile hundreds of
commuters and motorists in Nairobi Central Business District (CBD) were stuck
in traffic jams following a heavy downpour.
The rains that lasted for
slightly over an hour Wednesday afternoon also led to the flooding of the city
streets and major roads.
