Newspaper advert prompts Police to investigate rape case

29 January 2016, 19:59

Nairobi - The Kenya Police Service has launched investigations into an alleged defilement case following a complaint through a newspaper advert.

National Police Service NPS spokesman George Kinoti said police learnt of the incident through the press, The Daily Nation reported.

“I can assure you the officer will be in court in less than 24 hours once it is established an offence is occurred. It is a surprise we are receiving this information through the media," he stated.

“It is a very serious allegation in the first place. The investigation will also seek to establish if the member of the public was so frustrated to the extent of purchasing space in the newspaper,” he is quoted as saying.

The advertisement was placed by a Mr Ondicho Hassan Simba in the Daily Nation on Friday.

In a further report on Capital News, it is alleged that a police officer based in Kisii defiled a 12-year-old girl on January 22 but no action had been taken even after the matter was reported to Kisii Central Police Station.

The officer at the centre of the rape claims was at one point rescued by his colleagues after a mob descended on him with kicks and blows.

Inspector General of Police Joseph Boinnet now wants the matter thoroughly investigated and appropriate action taken if the officer is found culpable.

“I wish that the said police officer should be investigated and charged in a court of law urgently,” he appealed.
