Nairobi City subjected to grim environment

05 July 2016, 18:32

Nairobi – Residents in Nairobi City are being subjected to grim environment where the city is plagued with open manholes, heaps of garbage and raw sewerage seeping out damaged sewers.

According to Standard Media the city is also suffering from an increasing number of street children and muggings.

Staffers at Standard Media said they witnessed a street child throwing an object with bedbugs into a Mercedes Benz when the driver declined to give him something.

However Governor Evans Kidero said that it is the national government to ensure that street children return to their families.

“The issue of street families is not a Nairobi problem, the city does not breed street families. They come from all over the country,” Kidero said.

Central Organisation of Trade Unions Secretary General, Francis Atwol has also said they have been pushing for the sewage problem to be sorted out but as of yet, nothing has been improved.

Often what happens is that the city is only cleaned up by county officials when governors have scheduled tours of the city.

Already this week it was reported that residents of Nairobi and Kisumu counties are drinking water contaminated with antiretrovirals (ARVs) and pain killers.

A study conducted by University of Eldoret and Ghent University, Belgium established water in these two counties contain compounds used in ARVs, antibiotics, hormones and anti-depressants.
