09 February 2016, 17:17

Nairobi - A woman in Ongata Rongai is facing murder charges for helping her friend to procure an abortion that turned tragic.

Redempta Mwanzia is alleged to have committed the offense in November last year.

The victim, who worked for a local hardware, had been missing since Mwanzia took her to a clinic to procure abortion, Standard reports.

After her death, Mwanzia allegedly put her body in a sack and drove it back to her home, where she dumped it.

The doctor involved in the abortion will be lined up to testify against Mwanzia.

Abortion is illegal in Kenya, with survey indicating that about 87 percent of Kenyans do not support abortion.

However, women still procure abortions, with recent reports indicating that about half a million abortions are conducted in the country annually.

Out of these abortions, an estimated 375,000 cases being conducted by quacks.
