Molasses banned in Mt Kenya region

Meru - The government has banned the sale of molasses and yeast in Mt region.
While issuing the directive in Meru Thursday, Interior Principal Secretary Karanja Kibichu said the moratorium is aimed at stopping the brewing of illicit and second generation liquor.
According to Citizen TV, Kibichu said that molasses and yeast are the main ingredients of the killer brews and called for immediate action to stop the distribution of the products in the region.
This move comes a few months after the Laikipia County government banned the sale of molasses, commonly known as ‘sukari nguru’ in a bid to crackdown on chang’aa business in the area.
Recent NACADA reports reveal that about 30 000 Kenyans have died since 2009 as a result of consuming second generation liquors, something that prompted the President to call for a crackdown on the illicit brews.
