Media locked out of Tunoi trial

12 February 2016, 12:40

Nairobi - The media and members of the public have been locked out of the Justice Philip Tunoi bribery case.

The Daily Nation reported that journalists and the public were on Friday locked out of a case in which embattled Supreme Court judge Philip Tunoi is seeking to extend his stay in the Judiciary.

Justice Tunoi’s lawyers asked Court of Appeal judges for a private hearing.

The seven-judge bench is hearing an appeal by Justice Tunoi against a High Court decision that all judges must retire at 70.

The appeal comes at a time when he is waiting for President Kenyatta to appoint a tribunal to investigate allegations that he received a KES 200 million bribe.

The Star says that the seven-member bench of Court of Appeal judges is set to hear a petition against the verdict.

Tunoi and his High Court counterpart David Onyancha moved to the Appellate Court to challenge the judgement of a lower court agreeing with the JSC that they retire at age 70.

The two want to retire at 74, according to the old constitution, and not 70 as prescribed by the 2010 constitution.
