Kenyan Police Deny Surrounding Two Opposition Lawmakers’ Homes

14 June 2016, 16:16

Nairobi - Kenya’s police denied allegations by the opposition Coalition for Reforms and Democracy that officers had surrounded the homes of two lawmakers who belong to the group following accusations of hate speech.

CORD earlier said politicians Johnstone Muthama and Timothy Bosire had been “marooned by police” and were “under house arrest.” In an e-mailed statement, group spokesman Dennis Onyango called on supporters to assemble Tuesday morning and march to the mens’ homes, then escort them to a place where they can record police statements.

“Being under house arrest means you are surrounded by police -- nothing like that is happening,” police spokesman George Kinoti said by phone from the capital, Nairobi.

A statement on the police force’s Twitter account said the two, along with five other politicians, are being investigated after they were accused of making inflammatory statements.

“Today all the cited MPs must appear before the police to record their statements,’’ Kinoti said. “We shall compare their utterances, frame charges and take them to court.”
