IEBC clears ODM Malindi candidate despite forgery claims

08 February 2016, 14:13

Nairobi - The IEBC has cleared ODM's Willy Baraka Mtengo to vie for Malindi MP amid reports he forged his academic papers to secure employment.

According to the Daily Nation, Presiding officer Stephen Karani said that there was no evidence to prove that the ODM candidate was in the wrong at this juncture.

"We are treating the issue as a mere rumour. If he has issues of integrity he should be probed by the EACC and the Education ministry," he is quoted as saying.

The Independent Electoral and Boundaries Commission is expected to verify candidates' documents before clearing them.

The Star also reported that Labour Party's Attas Shariff was also cleared to contest for the seat in the by-election set for March 7.

The seat fell vacant after Mr Dan Kazungu, an ODM MP, was nominated Mining Cabinet Secretary by President Uhuru Kenyatta in November last year.

JAP candidate Phillip Charo is also expected to appear before the IEBC to get clearance to contest the seat. Other candidates also to be cleared by IEBC are David Mangi of Shirikisho party and Nelson Gunga of the Federal Party of Kenya.
