Former minister risks arrest for feigning illness to miss court

04 February 2016, 17:10

Nairobi - Former transport minister, Michael Kamau risks being arrested for feigning illness to enable him miss a court summon in an ongoing corruption probe.

Kamau has been ordered to appear in court on Thursday or face arrest after missing a summon in a court in the capital Nairobi on Wednesday due to what he claimed was illness.

The Daily Nation reported that Kamau, sent his lawyer to represent him, stating in a letter that he was in hospital seeking medical help.

However, the judge sitting in on the case was not amused after the document presented was found to have a number of discrepancies.

In a related report on The Star, the judge was angered by what he described as Kamau trying to avoid appearing in court.

"Having looked at the documents tabled before me, I realise that the doctor who treated the accused is not the same person who signed the document," the judge was quoted as saying in the report.

The judge, thus,  ordered Kamau to appear at the Milimani law courts on Thursday, saying a warrant for his arrest would be issued if he failed to.

Kamau, who was suspended from office in March 2015 and replaced in November 2015, faces five charges of abuse of office and irregular use of public funds.

The former minister is charged with willful failure to comply with government financial regulations in relation to the design of the Kamukuywa- Kaptama- Kapsokwony- Sirisia road in Western Kenya, which led to a massive embezzlement of funds by a phantom contractor.
