Family evicted over jiggers

26 January 2016, 14:41

Nakuru - Residents of Bahati Constituency in Nakuru County have evicted a family over jiggers.

The residents allegedly ordered the family of eight to leave the village because they were heavily infested with jiggers.

Citizen TV reports that area chief (name not given) told the family to leave because they were tainting the image of the village.

The family head, 62-year-old James Macharia said he was having a hard time taking care of his family, as his wife was mentally ill.

Macharia was said to have been working as a casual labourer, taking home wages of $2 (KES 200) daily, according to a mediamax report.

Machaira said his children were unable to go to school because of the jiggers.

Jiggers are small pin-head-sized fleas found in sandy terrain of warm, dry climates and feed on their warm-blooded hosts including man, cats, dogs, rats, pigs, cattle and sheep.

Female jigger fleas burrow into the skin of feet, hands, knees and buttocks where they form a round sack full of eggs. According to Ahadi Trust, an organisation dedicated to halting and reversing the spread of jiggers in Kenya and beyond, this condition mainly affects children under 12 years of age and may lead to sickness or even death.

Experts say jiggers can be killed by washing the affected parts with antiseptic and soap, after which the patient would be advised to apply hydrogen peroxide and oil around the infested area.
