Expensive cars stolen from UK, smuggled into Kenya

09 May 2016, 12:36

Nairobi - A report has indicated that most of the expensive cars driven in Kenya were stolen from the UK.

In the report published by The Economist on April 30, about 79,000 vehicles were stolen in Britain last year.

The British weekly magazine further notes that 80 per cent of these cars end up in east and central Africa, with further reports indicating that Uganda and Oman are the prime markets for these stolen cars.

Out of the 79,000 stolen last year, about 28 have allegedly been traced to Uganda, having passed through the corrupt customs officials at the Mombasa Port in Kenya.

According to Standard, Kenya Revenue Authority has confirmed that unscrupulous businessmen have in the past smuggled high-end vehicles from Europe through the Mombasa Port with the sole aim of evading tax.
