Cow gets drunk after taking traditional liquor meant for village ceremony

25 February 2016, 20:36

Bungoma, Kenya - A cow in Bungoma County almost got blind after gulping 40 liters of Busaa, a traditional brew prepared using sugarcane, ground maize and water.

The brew was being kept for a traditional ceremony when they cow downed it.

The owner of the cow said he found her lying on the ground too drunk to move.

He called his fellow villagers to help carry her but they could not even lift her, NTV reports.

One villager who could not believe that a cow could get drunk said that that was not a normal incident.

“How can a cow get drunk after taking such a small amount of busaa? This is witchcraft,” he said.

A veterinary doctor who was called in to help said he has already put the cow on medication and she is recovering well.

Busaa, though popular in Western Kenya, has been linked to oesophageal cancer.
