Clan elders charged for pouring pepper into a woman’s genitals

27 February 2016, 17:57

Makueni - Six clan elders have been sentenced to nine years in jail for putting pepper in a woman’s private parts at Kilia Primary School in Makueni.

It is alleged that the six elders, four women and two men, mixed ground pepper with sisal juice and then poured it into the genitals of the 46-year-old woman on September 7, 2013 as punishment for locking herself in a lodging.

The punishment, which was administered in front of 98 people, left her with health problems that have forced her to sell her land to pay for hospital bills.

Standard reports that her husband and children have since walked out on her.

Gender based violence has been on the increase in the country, with reports indicating that at least half of all Kenyan women have experienced violence since the age of 15.
