CJ Willy Mutunga celebrates 69th birthday on his last day in office

16 June 2016, 12:13

Nairobi - Chief Justice Willy Mutunga celebrates his 69th birthday today, which is also his last day in office.

Willy Mutunga resigns a year before his constitutional retirement age, even as his deputy Kalpana Rawal and Supreme Court Judge Philip Tunoi are entangled in retirement age row.

Mutunga took office in June 2011 and was expected to retire just two months before the next general election.

His retirement and the subsequent termination of his deputy leaves Justice Mohammed Ibrahim as the senior most judge to head the Judiciary, Capital FM reports.

Kenyans have taken to twitter to bid CJ Mutunga goodbye and also wish him a happy birthday.

Here are some of their messages:

@OkiyaOmtatah: "@WMutunga Wishing you good health, good luck and great success in your retirement. #AdiosCJMutunga"

@solo_ambuku: "@WMutunga CJ has demystified the hallowed corridors of court through his humility & simplicity to the chagrin of d Lords of Fear!"

@Rnagila: "Birthday, last day at work, good reason not to turn up, Happy Birthday! @WMutunga"

‏@CUEA_OFFICIAL: "@WMutunga Happy Birthday and thanks for all you did including the good will gesture of retiring early! God bless. #AdiosCJMutunga"

@Karanimutonga: "Happy Birthday CJ. You've done your best in a hostile environment. May God guide you in your next assignment @WMutunga #AdiosCJMutunga"

@MKitati: "You gave us your best, Kenyans will miss your zeal. Good on you @WMutunga for not wanting to overstay: what's wrong with your colleagues?"
