Women warned against giving children energy drinks

Nairobi - A nutritionist dissuaded parents from providing energy drinks to children as this would result in obesity.
Agnes Sitati advised the parents to instead include meals that were rich in complex carbohydrates in order to curb complications arising from overweight and obesity later in their lives.
“We have different strategies of managing excess weight and obesity in children. We have to be very careful because children need nutrients because they are growing so if we restrict their diet too much it will affect their growth and development,” said Sitati.
Her remarks come just a few days after another research report indicated that 70 percent of Kenyans suffer from obesity and attributed the condition to lifestyle and lack of exercise.
Sitati further called on parents to ensure that their children had enough play time as this played a crucial role in a child’s growth development.
She also noted that play not only keeps children active and alert but also enabled them to acquire interaction and socialization skills that every individual need later in life.
