Vietnamese national arrested with wildlife trophy

24 July 2014, 22:45

Nairobi - Police questioned a Vietnamese national who was arrested on Wednesday night with two pieces of elephant skin and two teeth of a lion at the main airport.

Airport Criminal Investigations Department (CID) Commander Joseph Ngisa confirmed on Thursday that the male suspect was nabbed during the screening time while trying to fly out of the country to Bangkok.

"We expect to charge him in court later today once we are through with investigations," Ngisa told Xinhua by telephone.

He said the investigators have not established the source of the teeth and skin which were intercepted at the Jomo Kenyatta International Airport.

The killing of elephants, rhino and other wildlife species is having a huge impact on tourism sectors of countries such as Kenya, and the authorities have stepped up surveillance on traffickers of ivory.

Heavily-armed criminals kill elephants and rhinos for their tusks, which are used for ornaments and in some folk medicines.

Wildlife conservationists have decried the entry of organized crime syndicates into the illegal wildlife trade, most notably of rhino horn and elephant ivory, which they said, has created a crisis situation in many African countries.
