Uhuru averts teachers strike with TSC appointments

21 July 2014, 16:45 John Wafula

Nairobi - President Uhuru Kenyatta has appointed six persons to a commitee which will appoint commissioners to the Teachers Service Commision TSC.

The move follows pressure from the Kenya National Union of Teachers KNUT last week that the positions be filled with immediacy.

KNUT had promised a national strike if the six commissioners were not appointed with immediate effect.

The selection panel includes former education permanent secretaries Prof Karega Mutahi and Prof George Godia.

Former KNUT chairman Joseph Chirchir is also in the commitee, as is, John Kipkorir, Esther Muhanji and Jean Njeri Muhoho.

There are only three of the constitutionally intended nine TSC commissioners currently in office.

They are Prof Salome Gichura, Ms Saadia Kontoma and Mr Cleophas Tirop.
