Uhuru: Unregistered SIM cards should not be operational

10 October 2013, 07:50 PSCU

Nairobi - President Uhuru Kenyatta has ordered an immediate mop up of all unregistered SIM cards to prevent their use by criminals.

He directed the Ministry of Information, Communication and Technology (ICT) to work with the Communication Commission of Kenya (CCK) and Mobile Phone Service Providers in ensuring that no unregistered SIM card was operational.

The President said national security was paramount and nothing would be allowed to compromise it.

“Move with speed in ensuring that the unregistered SIM cards are disabled completely. We do not want unscrupulous people to use them in perpetrating criminal activities,” the President said.

The President spoke at State House, Nairobi, during a meeting with Chief Executive Officers of the four Mobile Phone Companies in the country. The CEOs were Mr. Bob Collymore of Safaricom, Mr. Madhur Taneja of yuMobile, Shivan Bhargava of Airtel and Mickael Ghossein of Orange.

The President said the Ministry of Information and CCK should involve Mobile Phone Service Providers (MPSP) in ensuring that the system of SIM cards registration is accurate, tamper-proof and reflective of the genuine mobile phone subscribers.

He assured Mobile Phone Service Providers of full support as long as they operated within the law.

The meeting was also attended by the Information, Communication and Technology Cabinet Secretary Dr. Fred Matiangi.
