Nairobi - President Uhuru Kenyatta has stated that the Mpeketoni attacks, which left over 60 people dead were politically motivated.
In a speech delivered on national television Tuesday, the president categorically stated that the attacks which have seen many dead and property destroyed were not the work of terror organization Al- Shabaab.
" Mpeketoni attack was well planned, orchestrated and politically instigated, he said.
" Local leaders were involved in the planning of the attack and the intelligence supplied to Mpeketoni officers who didn’t act accordingly, he added.
He did add that the officers have been reprimanded and will be taken to court for coercing with criminals.
" The concerned officers have been suspended and will face full force of law, he said, referring to the Lamu OCPD as well as other local police officers.
The president also confirmed that the government will cater for the hospital bills of the injured and the funeral expenses of the dead as well as compensating those that lost property and their businesses. He also asked Kenyans to unite in the face of what he termed a common enemy.
" Let us unite as a country and work to ensure that those seeking to divide the country are not given space to, he said.
The statement will no doubt leave more questions than answers in the wake of Al- Shabaab's declaration that the attacks were of their making.
