Uasu: EACC should investigate misuse of funds in public universities

24 January 2014, 15:15

Nairobi - Members of the Universities Academic Staff Union (Uasu) have threatened to go on strike if the administrators of public universities fail to account for KES 7.8 billion that was meant for their salaries payment.

They want the Ethics and Anti-Corruption Commission (EACC) to probe and prosecute the alleged misappropriation of the funds by the institutions' administrators, Daily Nation reports.

According to them, the administrators used the money on other purposes instead of paying the lecturers and non-academic staff.

However, the Association of Universities of Kenya had earlier on insisted that the money was used for the intended purpose and that the lecturers got their money.

On Monday, the Kenya University Stuff Union (KUSU) Secretary General Dr Charles Mukwaya said all the university staff will stay off duty if the money was not accounted for.

He further stated that alleged misuse of the funds contravened the agreement that was signed between 2010 and 2013.
