US stringent on funding local relief organisations

Nairobi - The United States Department of State for Democracy (DOS), Human Rights and Refugees announced measures to ensure devious local nongovernmental organisations did not misuse funds meant for the empowerment of the underprivileged to sponsor terror.
The US organisation mentioned the country alongside a number of terror-ridden communities where there was political upheaval but sponsorship of relief programmes posed a dilemma.
“Applicants for activities in Afghanistan, Guatemala, Kenya, Lebanon, Philippines, and Ukraine are advised that successful passing of vetting to evaluate the risk that funds may benefit terrorists or their supporters is a condition of award,” stated the US agency.
The agency said applicants might be asked to submit information required by DS Form 4184, Risk Analysis Information about their company and respective principal personnel.
“Vetting information is also required for all sub award performance on assistance awards identified by DOS as presenting a risk of terrorist financing.”
Kenya is among a number of countries that have borne the brunt of a wave of terrorism mostly perpetrated by some Jihadist groups, among them the Al Shabaab.
The sect has carried out deadly attacks in the country protesting the deployment of local troops in politically-troubled Somalia.
