Two passengers escape unhurt as light aircraft crashes in Kenya's coast

Nairobi - Two passengers on Tuesday escaped unhurt after their light charter plane crashed near Manda Island, Lamu.

Lamu County Commander Ephantus Kiura said the four seater plane was taking off when it developed mechanical problem and crashed.

Kiura said all the pilot and passenger were rescued from the plane that was extensively damaged.

Kiura said the plane is owned by Manda Conservation Hotel and Safaris situated within the Manda Island in Lamu County.

"It was taking off from private airstrip within the hotel when it developed mechanical problem and crash-landed. We have no causalities the pilot and passengers are in stable condition," said Kiura.

Police said the two are in stable condition, and a team of personnel from bomb experts were dispatched to establish the cause of the accident.

Kiura said aircraft experts will visit the scene to conduct investigation over the crash.

Tensions have been high in the area after a series of attacks by suspected Al-Shabaab members.
