Transport paralyzed as new matatu rules take effect
01 April 2014, 11:48
Nairobi - Thousands of commuters were stranded at bus stops on Tuesday morning after owners of Public Service Vehicles (PSV) that had not complied with the new transport rules decided to keep them off the roads.
The few vehicles that were on the roads, took advantage of the situation to overcharge the commuters who were in a hurry to get to work, The Standard reports.
The new regulations stipulate that all matatus must belong to a sacco that should have at least 30 vehicles for it to be registered as public service vehicles.
They are also required to fit digital speed governors in the vehicles to monitor speed.
Yesterday, the High Court declined to suspend the rules as requested by matatu owners.
