Suspected Al Shabaab gunmen kidnap teacher in Dabaab

13 October 2015, 11:11

Dadaab - Suspected members of Al Shabaab on Monday kidnapped a Kenyan teacher near a refugee camp in Dadaab, police have said.

The teacher working with Windle Trust, an NGO, was identified as Judy Mutua. Her whereabouts is still unknown.

She was kidnapped near the Hagadera refugee camp by four unknown gunmen, said Dadaab divisional police commander, Raphael Kimilu.

The gunmen were said to have shot at an NGO car that Mutua was traveling in. They then ordered the driver to stop and took over the car.

They drove the car "a few kilometers away from the camp" before getting off and taking the teacher toward the Somali border, according to Kimilu.

The fate of the driver is also unknown.

Mutua was among those sent to the restive region to invigilate the national examinations which kicked off on Monday.

Police have launched a manhunt.
