Student commits suicide in Kisii

Kisii - A secondary school student has committed suicide in the Masongo Kisii Central, in a development that has left villagers in shock.
Villagers confirmed the 16-year-old took her own life by hanging herself with a mosquito net while her parents were not at home.
“She left a suicide note behind confirming she took her own life but the motive behind the act is yet to be established,” said the area chief, Eyande Mukaya.
The suicide comes barely a day after another student from Itiero secondary School in the same county, Kisii, committed a similar act.
Cases of student suicide were largely associated with bullying at school and pressure from both parents and teachers on the students to excel.
The government abolished listing of schools in national examination in a bid to discourage result-oriented competition that placed unnecessary pressure on students leading to depression and development of suicide tendencies especially on those who failed to excel.
