Nairobi - A minor reportedly died after police opened fire on protesting residents in Nairobi’s Korogocho area.
Residents reported that eight-year-old Cynthia Wanjiru, died on the spot after a stray bullet hit her.
Two other people were reported injured during the raid.
According to the residents, police had gone to arrest a suspected robber and allegedly fired shots even though the suspect had surrendered.
The victim’s body was not collected, forcing the fuming residents decided to take it to the police station demanding immediate action against the officers involved in the alleged shooting.
Residents, angered by the action, staged protests against what they termed as extrajudicial killings by police.
“We are told that there is this issue of amnesty for people who want to surrender. The suspect surrendered but it seems the officers who went to pick him were thirsty for that blood,” Wanjiru’s stepfather Peter Karanja, said.
Police have however denied responsibility.
