State releases funding for county roads

Nairobi - Contractors working under the Kenya Urban Roads Authority and Kenya Rural Roads Authority can now finally pick up their tools again as it was confirmed that the state has released Sh14.5 billion for construction and maintenance of roads, Standard Digital reports.
This news will welcome those counties affected by a halt in construction by the firms, contractors downed tools after they had not been paid for their work. According to the Kenya Roads Board, the country has 160,000 kilometres of roads with 11,000 kilometres unpaved.
Road safety in the country has been a major talking point with many horrible accidents marring the good transport system, however the government clamped down on unroadworthy vehicles , especially the matatus . But due to lax enforcement after the initial push, the number of
deaths in road accidents had increased in recent years. It was reported today that nine people died in a grisly road accident near Duka Moja at Ntulele, along the Mahi Mahiu – Narok road.
