Six dead, 15 injured in Machakos road accident

18 November 2013, 08:07

Machakos - At least six people were killed and 15 others injured in a grisly road accident in Machakos on Sunday.

Deputy Traffic Police Commander James Onyango confirmed that a minibus collided head-on with a lorry along Nairobi-Machakos road.

"The accident claimed five lives on the spot and one later died in the hospital, bringing the death toll to six. Some 15 others who were injured were rushed to the hospital," Onyango told Xinhua by telephone.

"Unless motorists change their attitude while on the roads, we will still continue to have more accidents on our roads," Onyango said.

He regretted that untrained drivers and poor law enforcement have worsened road accidents in the country, noting that indiscipline on the roads is to blame for a spike in traffic accidents.

Onyango disclosed that public service vehicles (PSV) constituted the highest number of road traffic crash fatalities and put the blame squarely on the drivers.
