President Kenyatta rues Gichangi's resignation

Nairobi - President Uhuru Kenyatta “regretted” the resignation of the head of the National Intelligence Service, Major-General Michael Gichangi, State House Spokesperson, Manoah Esipisu said.

Gichangi resigned on Thursday after seven years in office.

“His Excellency, President Uhuru Kenyatta regrets to announce the resignation, on personal grounds,” said Esipisu in a statement.

Gichangi will however have to hold the position of Director of National Intelligence Service until a replacement is found.

“His Excellency the President has asked Major-General Gichangi to remain in his role until a replacement is nominated,” added Esipisu.

His resignation comes at a time when the country is staring at the possibility of a referendum and at the backdrop of a spate of incidences of insecurity in the country.

Gichangi, a career army officer, was at the helm of the intelligence service during the 2007/2008 post-election violence.

According to Wikileaks’ cable of leaked diplomatic communications between Nairobi and the United States, the appointment of the Gichangi as a replacement for the former Director, Brigadier Wilson Boinett, was “marked by cronyism and tribalism as opposed to merit.”

The revealing cables said of Gichangi’s appointment to the intelligence docket was “anything but reassuring.”

The cables further described Boinett as “having transformed the NSIS from a domestic political tool into a modern professional intelligence service with an emphasis on external threats.”
