Machakos - At least seven people were injured when anti-riot police clashed with students from Machakos University College, who were protesting against alleged government’s plan to increase university tuition fees.
The confrontation began when the more than 500 students defied police order to return to college, The Standard reports.
Police were forced to fire in the air and lob teargas canisters to disperse the rowdy students.
University student leaders called for a nationwide strike to protest against attempts by the government to increase fees.
However, Education Cabinet Secretary Jacob Kaimenyi has denied the claims saying any fee increase must be initiated by University Councils, after a consultative process before it is endorsed by the Education Ministry and that no such process has been started.
