Police blame MRC on Gamba, Hindi attacks

07 July 2014, 08:03

Nairobi - Police Sunday blamed Gamba and Hindi attacks on members of Mombasa Republican Council (MRC), despite the claim by Somalia's Al-Shabaab militants and confirmations by survivors that the attackers were speaking in Somali and broken Swahili.

Deputy Inspector General of Police Grace Kaindi told a news briefing in Nairobi that initial investigations had indicated that members of the secessionist group were blamed for the attacks which she termed as political and religious.

"We are appealing to any person with information which can assist police in apprehending the attackers to report the nearest police station," she said.

Kaindi added that the police normally receive a lot of intelligence reports about impending attacks at the coast. "However we are not sure where exactly the incidents will occur," she said.

But a spokesman for Somalia's Al-Shabaab group issued a statement claiming that their fighters had carried out the attack in the area.

"The attackers came back home safely to their base," Al-Shabaab military spokesman Abdulaziz Abu Musab said, claiming that 40 people had been killed in the attack.
