Over 465 000 women had unsafe abortions last year

21 August 2013, 15:05

Nairobi - Reports indicate that the Kenyan national abortion rate stand at 48 per 1 000 women aged between 15 and 19 years.

Last year, 465 000 unsafe abortions were conducted in Kenya. Statistics published in Daily Nation indicate that highly ranked regions are Nyanza and Rift valley. The report further indicates that nearly 120 000 women sought medical attention for unsafe abortion-related complications in 2012.

Following revelations that more than 70 per cent of women seeking post-abortion care were not on any contraceptive at the time of conception, the report recommends that women contraceptive needs be met and post-abortion contraceptive counselling provided in order to prevent  unsafe abortions due to unwanted pregnancies.
