Oswago denies fraud charges, released on bail

30 October 2013, 15:00

Nairobi - A court has released the Independent Electoral and Boundaries Commission (IEBC) CEO, James Oswago, on KES 500 000 cash bail after denying corruption claims over the procurement of biometric voter kits.

Oswago was arrested on Wednesday together with three other IEBC officials by detectives from the Ethics and Anti Corruption Commission (EACC) in Naivasha, The Standard reports.

The EACC has been investigating how the electoral body had purchased faulty equipment, after they failed to work during the March general elections yet they were new purchases that cost the tax payers KES 1.3 billion.

The mentioning and hearing of the case will be on November 14.

Oswago claims that he is being targeted by the EACC over the allegations and that all commissioners in the commission should have been investigated.

"Police should arrest and only hold those considered to be flight risk or those who will interfere with evidence. Is #Oswago one?" @RobertAlai commented on twitter.
