Omamo defends KDF over looting

Nairobi - Defence Cabinet Secretary, Raychelle Omamo, absolved the Kenya Defense Forces (KDF) of any blame following the Westgate mall terror attack in Nairobi about two weeks ago.
Omamo denied reports that the soldiers behaved "irresponsibly" and "unprofessionally" during the attack that left more than 60 people dead and several others injured.
These sentiments come amid speculation that the soldiers were involved in looting during the four-day siege at the upmarket mall.
“The soldiers' conduct is guided by International Standard Operating Procedures. I urge the public to avail concrete information and evidence pointing to any unprofessional conduct by the KDF,” said Omamo.
Omamo added that it was not by default that the soldiers were deployed in the rescue mission at the mall but was within their professional mandate.
She added that the soldiers were constitutionally obliged to cooperate with other authorities during disasters and emergencies.
The aftermath of the terror attack has left senior government officials deeply divided with individuals pointing fingers on each other for failing to take action at the appropriate time, a move that is said could have helped to avert the tragedy.
