Nairobi - The United States sent its well wishes to Kenya as the country celebrated its 50 anniversary as an independent country.
“On behalf of President (Barack) Obama and the people of the United States, I congratulate the people of Kenya as you celebrate your Golden Jubilee on December 12,” said John Kerry, Secretary of State, in a statement made available to the media.
Kerry lauded the country on elections held earlier this year.
“Jamhuri (Independence) Day is a testament to the strength of the Kenyan people. The United States applauds Kenya for holding a peaceful national election this year and for implementing its new constitution,” he said.
He mentioned latest incidents that tested the resolve of Kenyans.
“The devastating Nairobi airport fire and the tragic terrorist attack at the Westgate Mall tested the nation’s strength, but Kenyans united in the face of adversity to overcome these challenges with courage and resolve.”
Kerry hailed the long-standing relations between the two countries.
“The United States and Kenya have been friends for half a century. We celebrate all that we have accomplished together, and we remain committed to working with Kenya to meet the challenges and seize the common possibilities that lie ahead.”
